athletics

San Francisco Friends School offers a variety of athletic opportunities for students in both the interscholastic and intramural realms. We believe that Middle School athletics should be a part of all students’ experience. Our after-school interscholastic athletic programs offer a wide range of physical activities which supplement and complement our students’ experiences in their physical education classes. It is our aim to provide our students’ myriad opportunities to explore, increase knowledge, and develop fundamentals and skills in individual and team sports.

Our student teams participate in the San Francisco Independent School Athletic League, a group of 12 similarly-sized schools. Our Middle School students compete in four sports each year: cross-country and volleyball (fall), basketball (winter), and futsal (spring). We encourage every Middle School student to experience life as a student-athlete each year of Middle School.

Philosophy
The San Francisco Friends School Athletics program offers a variety of athletic opportunities for students in both the interscholastic and intramural realms. We believe that Middle School athletics should be a part of all students' experience. Our after-school interscholastic and intramural athletic programs offer a wide range of physical activities that supplement and complement our students' experiences in their physical education classes. It is our aim to offer our students opportunities to further explore the fundamentals of individual and team sports, and to develop their skills and understanding. Our athletic philosophy is deeply rooted in the concepts of:

• Effort
• Teamwork
• Appreciation
• Self control
• Participation
• Goal setting
• Respect
• Sportsmanship
• Practice
• Responsibility

Developing relationships, exploring physical boundaries, having fun, and discovering one's self are concepts that are central to the sports experience but are often lost in a culture that often focuses solely on winning and losing. The valuable lessons learned through sports can be much more tangible and effective when athletes are invested beyond the win/loss paradigm. We strive to promote athletic participation and encourage students to continue their athletic journey on into high school and keep middle school sports as a positive first experience.
