friends community scholars

Friends Community Scholarships (FCS) are merit-based, comprehensive scholarships for high-achieving, low-income, middle school students from the neighborhoods surrounding the school. The program increases access to an exceptional education while supporting academic excellence, strengthening our school, and deepening our relationships with—and impact on—our neighborhood.

What the Friends Community Scholarships Cover

Friends Community Scholarships provide students with support and access to a broad range of opportunities, preparing them for high school, college, and beyond. In addition to covering 98% of the cost of SFFS tuition, the below items are included in the scholarship.

  • Academic tutoring and summer programs
  • After3 programming, which includes after school supervised study hall, workshops, and small group music lessons

Friends School is committed to the ongoing financial support of all Friends Community Scholars until they graduate; school-related expenses that arise in addition to those listed above will be covered on a case to case basis.

Application Process

The application process for Friends Community Scholarships is the same as the standard application process to SFFS. This process begins in October and concludes in March. We encourage families to begin the process as early as possible to ensure that all forms are complete by our deadlines. Click here for more information about the process. Scholars will be selected each year for their demonstrated academic ability, capacity for and commitment to hard work, and willingness to participate in the life of the school.

Diversity and Access at San Francisco Friends School

Friends Community Scholars is one of many outreach efforts at Friends School designed to add to the breadth of voices and talents of our school community. The Friends School seeks to build a student body that mirrors the diversity found in San Francisco. Children of all backgrounds are considered for admission without regard to a family’s ability to afford tuition. Annually, SFFS adjusts the tuition for over a quarter of our families, relieving parents of anywhere from 10% to 98% of the cost of tuition.
