San Francisco Friends School adjusts a student's tuition to match his/her family's economic situation. The Adjustable Tuition Committee reviews each family's financial and personal circumstances along with an independent tuition estimate from the School and Student Services organization. Tuition adjustments are sent to new families with their admissions decision letter in March.

Applying for an Adjusted Tuition involves two equally important processes:

PART A - Completing the Parents' Financial Statement on the SSS website.

PART B - Submitting a complete set of financial documents, including a full set of tax returns for 2021 and 2022, (get your tax returns started early!) The list of documents needed is below. After submitting your PFS, you will be given instructions about how to submit additional documents.

PART A

Completing the PFS

Families must complete the PFS (Parents' Financial Statement) located on the School and Student Services site (SSS). The SSS is an independent organization that analyzes family incomes and assets and estimates how much a family can contribute to educational expenses. This estimate is then reported to the school.

The PFS will ask you about family size, total income, savings, investments, debt, medical and dental expenses, any unusual expenses, and other assets, such as home equity. A guidebook for completing the PFS can be downloaded here.

SSS has helpful informational webinars for parents that can be viewed here. The short webinars explain different aspects of the PFS.

Fee: $60

Due: February 22, 2023

School Code: 3061

Notes

For divorced, separated, or unmarried parents who live in separate households, each parent/guardian is required to complete a separate Parents' Financial Statement.

Call SSS at 800-344-8328 with any questions about the PFS (Mon – Fri: 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. EST; Sat: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. EST)

PART B

Submitting documents directly to SSS

Please submit signed copies of the following documents to SSS by February 28, 2023:

  • 2021 and 2022 Federal Tax Returns (including any Schedules)
  • 2021 and 2022 W-2 forms
  • Copies of 2 most recent pay stubs (if not self-employed)
  • SFFS "Household Expenditures" form (download here)
  • If you are a majority partner in an LLP or corporation, submit IRS Forms 1065 & 1120, submit copies of 2021 and 2022 corporate tax returns and all supporting detail: i.e. IRS Forms K-1s, 1065, & 1120.
  • A letter of family circumstances to San Francisco Friends School. The San Francisco Friends School Adjustable Tuition Committee welcomes letters clarifying a family’s financial situation.
Although Adjusted Tuition may make it possible for a student to attend SFFS, we understand it will also require the families to carefully plan and budget in order to make tuition a financial priority. Sharing your families plans, budgets, and constraints will help us best understand your family's specific situation. Please submit any supplemental information about your financial circumstances that will help us best understand your family's specific situation. We encourage you to tell us as much as you can about your family. These letters may be sent by email or can be mailed directly to:
    San Francisco Friends School
    250 Valencia St.
    San Francisco, CA 94103
    Attn: Kim Plough
