As LatinX Heritage Month 2022 ends tomorrow, we are spotlighting the many ways we've celebrated at Friends, from featuring LatinX authors and stories in the Learning Commons and Lower School Library to studying important LatinX figures in our culture.

More specifically, 3rd- and 4th-Graders have been learning about the history of the taco over the past several weeks, and how this particular dish has evolved through the centuries, from the beginnings of the ancient Incan civilization to the more recent migrations of people from Central and South America to California.

Our 3rd Grade Friends also began practicing conversing and ordering tacos at our neighborhood Alfaro Taco Truck, which they visited today as a culmination of all their hard work! This unit has enabled students to acquire a greater awareness of Mexican culture, as well as the opportunity to take their verbal Spanish skills into real-life situations.

Up next, students will be preparing for Día de los muertos [Day of the Dead] and are working closely with Caren and Camilo to celebrate this very special time of the year, when we honor those who have passed, while continuing to hold them in our hearts. 4th-Graders will be building altars that will be placed in front of the Spanish classroom as they learn about the multiple symbols and objects that are part of a traditional altar.
