Director of Development

San Francisco Friends School

The San Francisco Friends School, a Quaker school moving to its permanent home in the Mission District of San Francisco, seeks an experienced Development Director for July of 2008. The school opened its doors in the fall of 2002 and will expand to include over 400 children in grades K-8, with two classes at each grade level in kindergarten through 4th grade and three classes in the Middle School (grades 5 to 8). It is part of a long tradition of Quaker education, committed to excellent academics, simplicity, mutual respect, diversity, integrity, peaceful problem-solving and social responsibility.

The Director of Development is a key member of the school's administrative team, reports to the Head of School, and works closely with the Board of Trustees and parent volunteers. SFFS seeks a person who resonates with the philosophy and mission of the school, and can continue to build a successful development program within the context of Quaker education.

The school launched a development program in its first year of operation, and for all six years the school's Annual Fund has a record of 100% participation. This enthusiasm carried into an $8 million campaign which is matched by an $8 million gift from the founding donors. The $16 million dollar campaign, which is solidly ahead of schedule, is expected to conclude in June of 2010.

The Director of Development manages two direct reports, a Development Assistant and a new position to be hired and designed with the incoming Development Director.

The school seeks an experienced professional who will direct a committed team of volunteers, Head of School, and fundraising staff in major fundraising initiatives including:

Campaign
- Lead the school's inaugural Light the Way capital building campaign of $8 million, working closely with dedicated parent and Trustee committees.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit and stewardship of major individual donors, as well as relevant foundations and corporations.
- Write and manage all foundation grant proposals and reports.
- Work with Board of Trustees to strategically address planned facilities growth, develop philanthropic priorities and identify long-term fundraising needs.
- Manage communications and stewardship. Annual Giving and Special Events
- Identifying, cultivating, and steward donors.
- Supervise staff and volunteer execution of the Annual Fund, with a 6-year record of 100% participation.
- Implement fund-raising activities, such as the annual Benefit and other community-building programs.

Operations
- Supervise gift processing and acknowledgment.
- Research, recommend, and implement development policies in collaboration with the Development Committee of the Board.
- Staff Development, Light the Way Campaign, Annual Fund, and Benefit Event committees..

Qualifications
- At least seven years of professional or managerial experience in development in nonprofit organizations.
- Capital campaign experienced is required.
- B.A. or B.S. degree.
- Experience working closely with leadership volunteers.
- Experience with the current version of Raiser's Edge 7 is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

Spanish Teacher
Grades Four, Five and Six

The San Francisco Friends School, a new Quaker school located in the Mission District of San Francisco, seeks an experienced Spanish teacher for September of 2008. The school opened its doors in the fall of 2002 and will expand to include over 360 children, with two classes at each grade level.

The school seeks experienced teachers compelled by the Friends school mission, which includes an exemplary education supported by a community dedicated to peaceful problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, respect for the individual, and silent reflection.

The Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade Spanish teacher will teach 12 45-minute periods four days per week. Each period will contain approximately 20 students. Responsibilities will include curriculum design and development, faculty/staff meeting attendance, committee work, student assessment and parent communications. The school supports a generous professional development program, encouraging teachers to attend workshops and seminars, visit schools, and learn about contemporary research relevant to the classroom and program. Sixth Grade Teacher Openings

Sixth grade teachers will serve as members of the founding team for the SFFS Middle School; each teacher will be responsible for two of the four "core" disciplines (math, science, language arts, and history) and collaborate to integrate service learning, outdoor education, technology, study skills and health education into the lives of middle school students. Each section will include fifteen to twenty students; middle school teachers will work in two teams - 5th/6th grade and 7th/8th. Responsibilities will include close teamwork for curriculum development, committee involvement, student assessment, parent communications and supervision of students at lunch and recess. The San Francisco Friends School seeks teachers who are particularly committed to service learning, and will create service opportunities within the core curriculum. The school is also developing an outdoor education program, and will include a three or four night camping trip in the sixth grade. Again, our goal is to richly integrate our curriculum with our Quaker testimonies or values, as well as such special opportunities as outdoor education.

Instrumental Music Teacher (part-time, or, combined with other teaching, full time)

The San Francisco Friends School seeks an experienced instrumental music teacher (for the fall of 2008) to support and lead a growing program. The school opened its doors in the fall of 2002 and will expand to include over 400 children in grades K- 8, with two classes at each grade level K-4 and three classes at each grade level 5-8. The school seeks a teacher compelled by the Friends school mission, which includes an exemplary education supported by a community dedicated to peaceful problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, respect for the individual, and silent reflection.

As the school grows, the instrumental music teacher will eventually work with classes of 15-22 students, small instrumental ensembles, as well as larger groups. The music position is less than half time in the first year, growing to full-time over the course of two years. If combined with other administrative or teaching responsibilities, it cold be structured as a full-time position in September of 2008. We are eager to build a top-notch performing arts program: responsibilities will include close teamwork other members of the fine and performing arts team, curriculum design and development, coordinating as least two performances a year, supervisory responsibilities, faculty/staff meeting attendance, committee work and parent communications. We strive to coordinate all of our visual and performing arts work with the curriculum at each grade level, deepening and strengthening learning across the disciplines.

The instrumental music teacher will also coordinate our growing after-school music lessons program, which currently includes about 65 students, 6 to 8 instruments, and a half dozen teachers who teach individually or in small groups.

The school supports a generous professional development program, encouraging teachers to attend workshops and seminars, visit schools, and learn about contemporary research relevant to their discipline. Our spacious new home in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco will be opening in the fall of 2008, with the music, art, drama, theatre, and gymnasium to be completed in the second building phase.
