Applegate, Garth
Instrumental Music Teacher

Garth Applegate attended the Westtown School, one of the country’s oldest Quaker institutions. Westtown fostered his love of music and appreciation of Friends’ values. Upon graduation, Garth attended the Berklee College of Music, where he further honed his studies of percussion, discovered his passion for all things jazz, and took up the study of classical guitar and composing. Garth received his BA in music education in 1999 and began teaching at Boston College High School, where he founded the school’s percussion ensemble. In 2001, Garth moved to North Carolina and taught general music at North Raleigh Country Day School, starting the school’s concert band. Garth moved to San Francisco in 2004 and began working for both the Performing Arts Workshop and the Principal Center’s Collaborative, a Court school serving youth on probation. While at the Principal Center he developed and taught the music and art curriculum, launched the school’s first ensemble program, and built the private lesson program and music composition/technology class. Outside of school, Garth keeps a robust calendar of Bay Area gigs and continues working on his first album of solo guitar compositions.
