Our Home
The San Francisco Friends School moved into its permanent home at 250 Valencia Street, in the refurbished Levi Strauss building, in the fall of 2008. Architect Peter Pfau designed the school to retain the open, light feeling of the historic space, and honored the school’s mission with close attention to sustainability and simplicity. In the fall of 2009, a gymnasium, two studios, and three classrooms were added to the third floor of the building, completing the build-out of over 68,000 square feet in the 80,000 square foot building. SFFS facilities include twenty-two classrooms, a gymnasium, science laboratories, performing and visual arts studios, a spacious library, two multi-purpose rooms, and Quaker Meeting Room. These designated spaces are supplemented with commons areas, offices, a dining hall, and galleries. In the front of the building, a 10,000 square foot playground and garden provides ample space for recess, lunch and outdoor play.
The Light the Way campaign raised funds for the renovations of our new school building at 250 Valencia Street. Light the Way was launched in 2006, with a community goal of $8 million and a matching gift of $8 million from the Sarah and William Hambrecht Foundation. This goal was eventually raised to a total of $20 million. Families, faculty and staff, GrandFriends, and foundations generously supported the campaign and helped us reach our financial goal and achieve an equally important milestone of full community participation. The Light the Way campaign concluded in the fall of 2009.
