Learning Commons Coordinator
San Francisco Friends School seeks a trained and experienced full-time coordinator for our Middle School Learning Commons. We seek a teacher librarian or technology/media specialist who is compelled by the school's Quaker mission and has experience working with faculty and students in 5th through 8th grades. Working with the Academic Dean, the Lower School Librarian, and the Educational Technology Director, the Learning Commons Coordinator will help plan the yet-to-be-built Middle School Learning Commons (~ 2,000 square feet) and will develop and deliver the new Learning Commons educational program.
The Learning Commons Coordinator's duties will include:
- Establishing and maintaining a welcoming and well-used space that supports the SFFS learning community – students, teachers, and parents
- Collaborating with teachers to support the effective integration of information and communication skills and technologies to enhance student learning
- Contributing to the development of a K-8 scope and sequence in media literacy and information technology
- Teaching students, staff and community how to access, evaluate, use, share, and create information from a variety of sources
- Modeling and promoting literacy and the enjoyment of reading in all media formats
- Developing the collection of print materials to support reading for pleasure as well as the school's educational curriculum
- Selecting and delivering new media in support of purposeful technology usage in teaching and learning
- Working as a full member of the middle school teaching team, including serving as a student advisor and other duties as needed

Middle School Teaching Assistant
Teaching assistants are important members of the SFFS teaching team. The assistant is expected to working toward being a classroom teacher, and while SFFS does not have a formal mentoring program, we are eager to support assistants who wish to develop their skills as educators.The San Francisco Friends School is an Independent K-8 school in the Mission District that was founded in the tradition of Quaker schools.
We seek an teaching assistant for the 2012-2013 school year. This assistantship position at SFFS is a full time, one-year contracted position. Having opened our doors in 2002, we now have 424 students in our K-8 school. This particular position gives experience and support to our middle school teachers and students. SFFS seeks candidates compelled by the school's mission, which includes exemplary education supported by a community dedicated to peaceful problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, respect for the individual and silent reflection.
The middle school teaching assistant will be involved in the following duties:
- Supervision of children, including recess, lunchtime, arrival and dismissal
- Maintaining classroom spaces, and preparing materials for lessons
- Student observations
- Serving as a co-advisor
- Working with individual, small and large groups of children in all subjects
- Accompanying students and attending specialist classes, as needed
- Assembling student portfolios
- Provide short-term coverage for lead teachers, as needed
- Assist in coordination of field trips, service learning and outdoor education
- Participation in faculty and staff meetings
Additional responsibilities may be negotiated based on the skills, expertise and profile of the applicant. The assistant is encouraged to join school activities and serve on school-wide committees. The middle school assistant will attend a few evening special events, like Back to School Night, New Family Orientation evenings, conferences and may support teachers in assessments and preparations for report writing, as requested.
